LIU Brooklyn and Robert Morris have played many great games in their long rivalry as NEC foes. In recent history, names like Boyd, Olasewere, Brickman, Karvel Anderson, Lucky Jones and Velton Jones immediately comes to mind.

Wednesday night, inside a raucous Steinberg Wellness Center which stuffed in over 1400 fans to watch another great game to add to the long legacy of the Robert Morris-LIU Brooklyn rivalry, it was Robert Morris senior point guard Kavon Stewart who came up his the biggest shot of his career with three seconds remaining to upset LIU Brooklyn and advance to the NEC tournament semifinals with a 69-68 win for the Colonials. The entire LIU Brooklyn men’s basketball team came out in warmups with white headbands on. The same headbands redshirt senior Jerome Frink wears for most games during the season.

The team did it in support of their co-captain who on Monday lost his father to a sudden heart attack that ultimately claimed his life.

Frink with a heavy heart decided to play Thursday night while dealing with the shocking and sudden loss in his life.

But it was Robert Morris who had lost three straight and desperately looking for a win that made more plays than LIU in defeating the Blackbirds 67-63 at the Steinberg Wellness Center Thursday night in front of a crowd of 687 in attendance.

LIU Brooklyn impressively sweep Western PA trip, now 3-1 in NEC

It is always tricky when NEC teams, especially those in the tri-state area as well as Bryant, have to make the long bus trip to Western Pennsylvania to face Robert Morris and Saint Francis U on the road. Teams from out east usually never look forward to the multiple-hour ride to Moon Township and Loretto.

LIU Brooklyn this weekend made the journey out west to face Robert Morris on Thursday and Saint Francis U. on Saturday and left Western Pennsylvania with a pair of impressive road wins, defeating RMU 65-54 and defeating SFU 83-70. [Read more…]

This past Wednesday, the Northeast Conference conducted their annual NEC Basketball Social Media Day for the fifth consecutive season at the Barclays Center, home of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets and NHL’s New York Islanders and once again, all ten NEC men’s head basketball coaches were in attendance along a student-athlete representative from each team.

As is the case during the preseason, hope springs eternal and everyone seemed to be in very good spirits as we are just days away now from the start of the 2016-17 campaign.

I got the opportunity to speak to eight of the ten NEC men’s basketball coaches and players with the expectations of Bryant’s Tim O’Shea and Central Connecticut’s Donyell Marshall but I was able to watch NEC Front Row/ESPN3 production put on by the wonderful people at the Northeast Conference after the event and got to hear from all ten men’s basketball coaches and players. BHJ’s 2016-17 NEC Men’s Basketball Preview

When looking back at the 2015-16 Northeast Conference season, it had its usually fare of the predictable and unpredictable. Nothing displayed that more than the NEC championship final which pitted the one of the preseason favorites in Wagner against the team no one predicted would have even be in the NEC tournament much less in a NEC final in Fairleigh Dickinson. FDU went on to win the NEC title and showed why year after year, this conference can be so tough to get a true gauge on.

The 2016-17 NEC season will likely be more of the same. Several big names (Rodney Pryor, Cane Broome, BK Ashe, Martin Hermannsson) either transferred out of the NEC or decided to go pro leaving behind some big holes to fill for their teams and muddling up some expectations.

Yet, every season bring about new opportunities and new names and faces who will be thrusted into the spotlight and become major players and key figures to teams as the season goes along. [Read more…]
