This week was the week before THE week.

Before LIU Brooklyn plays probably their two biggest games of the season in their final week of the regular season, they needed to get by this penultimate week which featured a less than usual buzz-worthy Battle of Brooklyn game at St. Francis Brooklyn and then a matchup of the two hottest teams in the NEC with the Blackbirds hosting Sacred Heart.

On Thursday, LIU Brooklyn took the short journey across Fulton Street to the Pope Physical Education Center at St. Francis Brooklyn to take on the last-place Terriers who have had a tough season as they begin their rebuilding efforts. [Read more…]

It was a matchup of two 7-4 teams in which the winner would be in a tie for second-place in the NEC standings with Fairleigh Dickinson. Saint Francis U. came in winners of four of their last five games while LIU Brooklyn entered as losers of three of their last four.

Making it even more challenging for the Blackbirds, they would not have their co-captain and leading scorer and rebounder, Jerome Frink, who would miss his first game in his two seasons with LIU after the loss of his father earlier in the week.

Although LIU gave it a valiant effort with several of the younger players stepping up and coming up big, LIU fell short in the closing minutes in losing 80-78 to the Red Flash at the Steinberg Wellness Center Saturday afternoon. [Read more…]

Recapping LIU Brooklyn’s trip to the Steve Wright Classic

The LIU Brooklyn men’s basketball team on Monday afternoon completed the three games in three days Steve Wright Classic event up at Boston University and for the Blackbirds, it was a rather successful trip as they went 2-1.

On Saturday, LIU defeated Northeastern, 78-74, as the Blackbirds came back from a 12-point second half deficit. They were led by freshman guard Jashaun Agosto who scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half. Fellow freshman point guard Julian Batts scored a season-high 13 points and Jerome Frink (11 pts, 10 rebs) and Nura Zanna (10 pts, 10 rebs) both finished with double-doubles. The win gave LIU a 3-0 start which was the first time since the 1982-83, 1983-84 seasons in which the Blackbirds started out 3-0 in back-to-back seasons. [Read more…]

Last season, LIU Brooklyn finished with a winning overall record for the first time and a .500 record in the NEC since the 2012-13 season, Jack Perri’s first season as the Blackbirds’ head coach.

It has been a long, and at times, a painful rebuilding process for LIU Brooklyn men’s basketball. Now comes the 2016-17 season and there is quite a bit of optimism surrounding this team heading in, much more so than there has been going into a season in the last few years.

With the Blackbirds coming off a NEC tournament semifinal run and with a mostly senior starting lineup returning for one more run, this is the season Blackbirds fan have been awaiting since the glorious three-year championship run ended back in 2013. [Read more…]

Poor second half takes down LIU Brooklyn to fall to 3-2

Well, I have to imagine the LIU Brooklyn men’s basketball team is looking forward to getting on a plane and returning back to campus tonight because they probably wished this Thanksgiving weekend two-game road trip never happened.

The Blackbirds saw Dartmouth sophomore guard/forward Miles Wright carve them up for a career-high 39 points and set a new Dartmouth home arena record in a second-half beatdown which led to a 79-56 loss for LIU and drop them to 3-2 overall. Wright previously career-high before Sunday’s game was 21 points he scored last season against Brown. [Read more…]

Talk about a dramatic start to your season.
