LIU Brooklyn only have themselves to blame in brutal loss at CCSU Saturday

It looked like Saturday would be a good one for the LIU Brooklyn men’s basketball team. It started with LIU learning that one of the teams ahead of them, Fairleigh Dickinson, lost in dramatic fashion to Bryant in overtime given them a chance to climb back up in the NEC standings.

All the Blackbirds had to do was go out and beat Central Connecticut State, a team that entered Saturday’s matchup at 3-17 and 1-8 in the conference and had a KenPom ranking of 342 out of 351 teams.

Unfortunately for LIU, who didn’t play a great game on Thursday evening against Sacred Heart but was able to pull out the victory, they picked a terrible time to play one of their worst games of the season as the Blackbirds spoiled a great opportunity as fell to the lowly Blue Devils 61-52 at the Detrick Gym Saturday afternoon. LIU Brooklyn returned to action on Thursday looking to start a new winning streak which was snapped on Saturday in their loss to first-place Fairleigh Dickinson on the road.

The Blackbirds with the help of their starting upperclassmen made just enough plays to edge out Sacred Heart at the Pitt Center in their 60-57 victory Thursday night.

LIU got off to a slow start and trailed 10-3 nearly six and half minutes into the game which saw LIU head coach Jack Perri visible frustrated and looking for some kind of spark to get his team going. Perri even inserted little-used walk-on Mitchell McMullen as well as sparsely-used senior Glenn Feidanga into the game five minutes in before quickly going back to his starters.  [Read more…]

It was supposed to be a premier matchup between two of the three first-place teams in the Northeast Conference entering today. But Fairleigh Dickinson came with their explosive offense and added a strong defensive game and took advantage of LIU Brooklyn miscues in the first half to open up a healthy lead which LIU couldn’t overcome and snapped the Blackbirds six-game win streak with an impressive 83-66 win at the Stratis Arena in Teaneck, NJ.

LIU lead for all of 15 seconds in this game in the early stages as FDU were quick to take advantage of LIU turnovers and turn them into points.

LIU were able to stay with the Knights even after going cold from the field due to FDU’s foul woes that saw LIU reach the double bonus with 10:46 left in the first half.  [Read more…]

LIU Brooklyn advanced their winning streak to six as the Blackbirds closed the game on a 9-2 run which included several big time plays from senior Jerome Frink and defeated Wagner Thursday night at the Steinberg Wellness Center 76-69 to move to 6-1 in NEC play and 13-7 overall.

The Blackbirds led for the first 37 minutes of this game and led by as much as twelve points late in the first half but Wagner, who entered the game 3-3 in the NEC and was tabbed to finish second in the preseason by the NEC coaches, wasn’t going to go away quietly.

Wagner got back in it, thanks mostly from a strong second half by senior forward Mike Aamen, who scored all 13 of his points in the final twenty minutes and his layup with 2:41 left tied the game at 67 before LIU would close the Seahawks out with their game-ending run.  [Read more…]
