Who to watch on the other side

Shamorie Ponds, 6’1” Freshman Guard

Ponds is the hottest Red Storm player at the moment. The Brooklyn native out of Thomas Jefferson High School is coming two huge games in which he is averaging 25.5 ppg. On Thursday night, he lit up Fordham for a season-high 26 points on 9 of 13 shooting including making seven three-pointers. He has been carrying the Red Storm offensively since redshirt freshman guard Marcus LoVett has been out.

What you need to know

LIU Brooklyn is in the middle of their first losing streak of the season as they have dropped the last two games. The Blackbirds are coming off their worst loss of the season at North Carolina Central, losing 79-56.

This is LIU’s first game back in Brooklyn since beating Loyola (Md.) back at the Barclays Center on November 16th.

The Blackbirds have been outscored 214-165 over the last five halves of action.

LIU’s last win over a Big East opponent was against St. John’s just over 20 years ago when LIU won at Carnessecca Arena 76-73 back on November 23, 1996.

This is just the second-ever home game for LIU in this series. The last home game was the first game in this series all the way back in the 1930-31 season. LIU lost that game 38-27.

St. John’s only has one true road win in the year-plus of the Chris Mullin era and that came recently on December 2nd at Tulane.

LIU has three players averaging at least 12 ppg in Jashaun Agosto (12.0), Iverson Fleming (12.4) and Jerome Frink (17.0).

LIU has won the last three non-conference home games at Barclays Center, their last loss coming to Hofstra back on December 28, 2014. LIU is 5-4 all-time at Barclays Center against non-conference opponents.
