Yes, it is only the second game of the Northeast Conference season but with a looming trip to Western Pennsylvania to face Robert Morris and St. Francis U. next weekend, it was a big game for LIU Brooklyn to try and get at home against Bryant Saturday afternoon.

The Blackbirds got a huge boost from starting point guard Jashaun Agosto after he missed Thursday’s heartbreaking loss to Mount St. Mary’s and along with another double-double from senior forward Jerome Frink, LIU Brooklyn built a 17-point halftime lead and would go on to beat Bryant 74-63 to even their NEC record at 1-1 and snap a four-game losing streak in the process. In what was a tight and at times a chippy affair between Mount St. Mary’s and LIU Brooklyn at the Steinberg Wellness Center in the 2016-17 Northeast Conference opener, it came down to the final 4.2 seconds to determine a winner.

Mount St. Mary’s junior forward Chris Wray went coast-to-coast and put in a layup high off the glass and possibly off the fingertips of LIU’s Raiquan Clark to beat the Blackbirds on the road 67-65 in a heartbreaking fashion.

LIU Brooklyn couldn’t hold on to a nine-point halftime lead and that built up to eleven after a Nura Zanna dunk to start the second half scoring.  [Read more…]

To say LIU Brooklyn women’s basketball has had a rough non-conference season would be quite an understatement. It has been a tough go for the Blackbirds and it only got tougher after a 57-45 loss to UMBC at the Barclays Center on Wednesday evening.

With the loss, LIU completes non-conference play at 1-10 before starting up NEC play next Thursday against Mount St. Mary’s.

The Blackbirds really challenged themselves in November and December, playing games at Ohio State and Seton Hall as well as against Wisconsin-Milwaukee and George Mason but unfortunately for them, they didn’t get the results they desired. [Read more…]

For LIU Brooklyn men’s basketball, their non-conference schedule had been a tale of two months.

After a fast 6-1 start to their season in the month of November, the Blackbirds have struggled in the month of December and things didn’t get any better Wednesday night as they were defeated by the Niagara Purple Eagles on the Brooklyn Nets’ Barclays Center floor, 75-66, and dropped their third straight game and five out of their last six.

The only saving grace out of the month of December, the upset victory over St. John’s at Barclays back on December 11th. Things would be even worse if it wasn’t for that. [Read more…]

It had been well over a month since the LIU Brooklyn men’s basketball team lasted played on their home floor on campus. The Blackbirds didn’t get the return home they were looking for.

Dartmouth, who came to Brooklyn winless at 0-9, left with their first win of the season with an 82-68 victory at the Steinberg Wellness Center on Sunday afternoon.

Last season, Dartmouth beat up on LIU in a 79-56 win and it was pretty much a replay of that same game.

The Big Green took the game to LIU from pretty much the opening tip. The Blackbirds came out of the gate looking flat for whatever reason and could never seem to get things going at all throughout the game especially in the second half. [Read more…]
