On Monday, the Northeast Conference announced that LIU Brooklyn sophomore guard Martin Hermannsson was named co-NEC Player of the Week along with Wagner junior forward Michael Carey.

Hermannsson earned his second NEC Player of the Week honor of the season after having himself an outstanding week in which LIU went 1-1. The Icelandic guard averaged 21.5 points, 7.0 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals in his two games. He also shot 52.1 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free throw line.

Last Thursday against Sacred Heart, Hermannsson had a stat line no player in the Division I men’s basketball had. So far he is only player this season to do the following: score 22 points, grab 8 rebounds, dish 7 assists, grab 5 steal and commit zero turnovers. Take away the turnovers and only LSU’s Ben Simmons and Providence’s Kris Dunn had a game with at least 20/7/7/5.

Hermannsson is currently second on the team in scoring and fifth in the NEC with 15 points per game. He is also in the top three in the NEC in five other categories and is sixth in the NEC in three-point shooting at 40 percent.

Hermannsson’s honor marks the fifth time in thirteen weeks that a LIU Brooklyn player was named NEC Player of the Week and now tied with LIU Brooklyn forward Jerome Frink for the team lead with two NEC Player of the Week honors.

Congrats to Martin for earning the honor.
