2015-16 College Basketball Preview Magazines make their NEC predictions

The start of practice for the upcoming college basketball season is so close now you can almost hear the bouncing of the balls and the squeaking of sneakers on the gym floor.

This Friday is the official start date of the season and begins the countdown to opening night on November 13th. With the season getting ever so closer, it is the start of prediction time and with that, three college basketball preview magazines have hit the newsstands this month in Lindy’s SportsAthlon Sports and Sporting News College Basketball Yearbook.

Each magazine made their predictions for how each Division I conference will fare in 2015-16. Usually in these magazines, the one-bid conferences like the Northeast Conference are pretty much summarized into one paragraph per team and take up about a page to a page and half of the entire magazine.

Here is how Lindy’s sees the NEC going this upcoming season:

  1. Robert Morris
  2. Bryant
  3. St. Francis Brooklyn
  4. LIU Brooklyn
  5. Mount St. Mary’s
  6. Sacred Heart
  7. Saint Francis U.
  8. Central Connecticut State
  9. Wagner
  10. Fairleigh Dickinson

And here is how Athlon Sports sees the NEC going this upcoming season:

  1. Mount St. Mary’s
  2. Robert Morris
  3. Bryant
  4. Sacred Heart
  5. St. Francis Brooklyn
  6. LIU Brooklyn
  7. Saint Francis U.
  8. Wagner
  9. Fairleigh Dickinson
  10. Central Connecticut State

Finally, here is what the Sporting News predicts the NEC will go down:

  1. Robert Morris
  2. St. Francis Brooklyn
  3. Mount St. Mary’s
  4. LIU Brooklyn
  5. Sacred Heart
  6. Bryant
  7. Saint Francis U.
  8. Wagner
  9. Central Connecticut State
  10. Fairleigh Dickinson

All three preview magazines select Robert Morris’ Rodney Pryor as NEC Player of the Year/Top Player for this upcoming season.

And now some observations:

To start, how Lindy’s has Mount St. Mary’s sixth is beyond me. They will likely be no worse than a second place team on most expert NEC prognosticators lists although Sporting News picked them to finish third. At least, they didn’t pick them to finish sixth like Lindy’s did.

Both RMU and Bryant are picked in the top three by Lindy’s and Athlon’s. RMU is a no-brainer. I’m a bit surprised by some of the early love Bryant is getting. I’m not so sure Bryant is going to finish that high up in the standings. I think Sporting News has them in a more appropriate spot at sixth.

Conversely, Wagner was picked eighth, ninth and eighth respectively. This is just my opinion of course but I think Wagner will be team no lower than a seven-seed this season so I think the mags have the Seahawks a bit too low.

As far as LIU is concerned, the mags picked them to finish fourth, sixth and fourth respectively. If you read what each magazine had to say, they all had positive things to say about this season’s Blackbirds team. They believe LIU is on the back on the rise in the conference with their roster of mostly still young talent.

All three magazines have Saint Francis U., Wagner, Central Connecticut State and Fairleigh Dickinson in the last four positions in the standings with different order of finishes.

If there is one team that might be hard to pinpoint going into the season, that looks like it is going to St. Francis Brooklyn. They are picked third, fifth and second respectively. The Terriers lost a lot in Jalen Cannon and Brent Jones but then they all return some big pieces in Amdy Fall, Tyreek Jewell, Chris Hooper and Glenn Sanabria. No doubt they will be the toughest team to predict going in.

More previews and predictions will be trickling out as preseason start gearing up as we make our way towards the November 13th start of the 2015-16 college basketball season. I’ll will try to keep tabs on as many if not all the NEC previews and predictions that start making their way out to the public both online and in the newsstands so stay tuned for more NEC prediction fun in the coming weeks.
