Martin Hermannsson/Iceland’s run in Eurobasket 2015 comes to an end

Heading into the 2015 FIBA Eurobasket, Iceland knew they were in for a major uphill battle in a group many felt was the strongest group of the four in the tournament. Iceland, who qualified for the Eurobasket for the first time ever, ended their run in the tournament on Thursday without a win, going 0-5 in a group that included Germany, Spain, Turkey, Serbia, and Italy.

LIU Brooklyn sophomore guard Martin Hermannsson, got to participate in the tournament and played in all five games for Iceland, coming off the bench in every game.

Iceland lost to Germany in the opener 71-65, followed by a 71-64 loss to Italy, then a loss to Serbia 93-64, and then another loss to Spain 99-73 and finally a loss to Turkey 111-102.

Hermannsson ended his first Eurobasket averaging 4.6 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 15.4 minutes per game. He made 10 of 23 field goal attempts for a 43.5 field goal percentage but was just 1 of 8 from three in which his only three made came in game one against Germany. He was 9 of 15 on two-point field goals.

Hermannsson completes his second straight summer with the Icelandic senior men’s basketball team. He should be back on campus in Brooklyn just in time for the start of preseason team workouts which begins next week.

He is expected to return as LIU’s starter at the two-guard position this season and will wear #15 this season which was last worn by LIU’s all-time assist king Jason Brickman two seasons ago.
