It was only matter of time before it was officially announced but on Sunday we finally got the official word.

LIU Brooklyn’s all-time leading scorer Jamal Olasewere has once again been selected to play for the Nigerian senior national team which will compete in the 2015 FIBA African Championships (aka Afrobasket) in Tunisia which begins this Wednesday, August 19th and continues through August 30th. The winner of this tournament automatically qualifies for 2016 Summer Olympics basketball tournament in Brazil.

Olasewere will play in his second tournament for Nigeria. He played for Nigeria in the 2013 FIBA Afrobasket in which Nigeria finished seventh and failed to qualify for the 2014 FIBA World Championships.

Olasewere finished the 2013 FIBA AfroBasket averaging 5.8 ppg/2.1 rpg/1.5 apg in 17.8 minutes per game through the seven games, all coming off the bench. He shot 14 of 39 (35.8%) from the field, 4 of 14 from three (28.5%), and 9 of 15 from the charity stripe (60%).

His best game statistically came in the blow out win against Central African Republic in which he had a tournament-high 14 points and 5 rebounds in 14 minutes and was perfect from the free throw line (4/4) and was above 50% shooting from the floor.

Here is the official roster for Nigeria for the 2015 FIBA Afrobasket (tweet courtesy of @NigeriaBasket):

Nine of the twelve players selected were also on the Nigerian team back in 2013. The team also includes Al-Farouq Aminu who signed this summer with the Portland Trail Blazers and Michael Gbinije who will be a senior next season at Syracuse.

Nigeria will face Central African Republic on Wednesday to begin Group A play then face Uganda on Friday, August 21st and finished group play with host nation Tunisia on Sunday, August 23rd.

All of the 2015 FIBA Afrobasket can be seen online on www.livebasketball.tv (pay subscription). I will posting Olasewere stats after each game on my Twitter feed (@NelCastBHJ).

Congratulations to Jamal on his selection and we look forward to his play for Nigeria once again in the coming days.
