Looking through the 2014-15 NEC MBB Non-Conference Schedules

In our sixth installment of our 2014-15 NEC men’s basketball previews, it is time to delve into the men’s basketball schedules of all ten NEC teams. Some NEC teams released their schedules before the summer even began (Robert Morris) while others waited to just about the unofficial start of this college hoops season to release theirs (LIU Brooklyn and Saint Francis U.).

In this preview, I will look through each team’s schedule and highlight the big opportunity games in the non-conference and give each team an one through ten rating based on the effect their non-conference schedule will have on their teams.  Let’s start with the defending NEC champions, Mount St. Mary’s.

Mount St. Mary’s

Date Opponent Time
Nov. 14 at Arizona 8:00 PM
Nov. 19 Maryland-Eastern Shore 7:00 PM
Nov. 22 at Bucknell 7:00 PM
Nov. 26 at Wake Forest 7:00 PM
Dec. 2 at Seton Hall 7:00 PM
Dec. 6 at Loyola 7:00 PM
Dec. 9 at Notre Dame 7:00 PM
Dec. 13 Norfolk St. 2:00 PM
Dec. 20 at American 1:00 PM
Dec. 22 Binghamton 7:00 PM
Dec. 29 at Old Dominion TBA

The Mount only makes three appearances at home during non-conference play so they’ll be pretty much road warriors before NEC play starts in January. The non-conference road schedule is tough but they will be a couple of true winning opportunities. They will face big challenges in Arizona, Wake Forest, Seton Hall and Notre Dame on the road. They need to win all three home games and steal a few wins on the road if they plan to go into NEC play above .500. I can’t see it happening but these games should make them battle-tested come January and February.

BHJ Non-Conference Rating: 8/10

Robert Morris

11/19/2014 at Bradley 8:00 p.m.
11/22/2014 at Georgetown* Noon
11/26/2014 Chattanooga Noon
11/27/2014 Coastal Carolina/Louisiana-Monroe Noon/2:30 p.m.
12/2/2014 Youngstown State 7:00 p.m.
12/7/2014 Buffalo 1:00 p.m.
12/13/2014 Duquesne 4:00 p.m.
12/17/2014 at Toledo 7:00 p.m.
12/22/2014 Delaware 7:00 p.m.
12/30/2014 at Clemson 7:00 p.m.

Robert Morris did a nice job arraigning the schedule to get five home games plus playing in the mainland portion of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. RMU usually plays a pretty tough non-conference schedule and this season is no exception. They will plenty of challenging games to get some quality wins under their belt. The highlight games will be at North Carolina, at Georgetown, and at Clemson. The rest of games are not too shabby either.

BHJ Non-Conference Rating: 7/10

St. Francis Brooklyn

Date Opponent Time
11/15/2014 at Georgetown 12:00 pm
11/19/2014 Army 7:00 p.m.
11/23/2014 at Rutgers 5:00 p.m.
11/25/2014 at La Salle 7:00 p.m.
Barclays Classic*
11/28/2014 vs Norfolk State* 5:00 pm
11/29/2014 vs Saint Peter’s/Tennessee State* 5:00 pm/7:30 p.m.
12/6/2014 at Liberty 2:00 p.m.
12/9/2014 at NJIT 7:00 p.m.
12/13/2014 College of Mount Saint Vincent   2:00 p.m.
12/17/2014 Delaware State  4:00 p.m.
12/20/2014 Florida Atlantic  3:00 p.m.
12/23/2014 at Monmouth 7:00 p.m.
12/30/2014 Columbia    4:00 p.m.

The Terriers usually play a road-heavy non-conference schedule but this season they were able to get five home games even though one is against a Division II school which is what they did last season as well and they don’t play a home opponent that gets anyone overly exciting unless Army tickles your fancy. That is not their fault though. The opportunities for a couple of quality wins will be there early and then possibly late in their schedule. The middle section is where they need to make sure they get the wins they should. Starting their season at Georgetown will be fun one. They also have a couple of early opportunity games at Rutgers and at La Salle.

Bryant having to start their season at UConn is a rough spot. They play a couple of quality mid-major on the road in Vermont, Akron and Denver. They also play likely the two top Ivy League teams at home in Yale and Harvard. They play at Pittsburgh in a rare February non-conference game. Also when was the last time you saw an NEC team play not one but two non-conference games once the conference season begins. Not a usual occurrence.

The Blue Devils non-conference road schedule has its challenges with games at Maryland, Towson, Monmouth, and UConn but they will be opportunity for some road wins with games against Fairfield, Bethune-Cookman, East Carolina, Rider and Hartford. Their non-conference home schedule with the possible exception of Hofstra is relatively weak. They also don’t play their home opener until December 10th which is the latest any NEC team will open their home schedule this season.

Wagner will play a road heavy non-conference schedule and will start the season off in ACC country at Maryland. The rest of the schedule with the exception of the game at Cincinnati isn’t too overwhelming although they will have their challenges winning at Columbia, at Hofstra and at Vermont. Playing Penn at home is a good game and playing up-and-coming Monmouth at home as well should be a good test. They do also host Division III SUNY Old Westbury for their season opener which should be an easy win. All in all, their schedule is ok with the relatively young team they have this season.

The Pioneers did a good job of getting home games on their non-conference schedule. They get to play seven games in the state of Connecticut including six home games. The best home game on their non-conference schedule is their last one against Yale. They also have a few tough road games with games at Ohio State, James Madison and Rutgers. It is a schedule they can get some traction going heading into the NEC play which is what they need after their season last year.

12/10/2014 at St. John’s 8 p.m.
12/20/2014 Delaware 3 p.m.
12/23/2014 at Saint Peter’s 4 p.m.
12/29/2014 at Towson TBD

FDU with have a tough start to their season with road games at Saint Joseph’s, Rutgers and Columbia. Add on more road games in December at Notre Dame, St. John’s and what could be a good St. Peter’s team, they didn’t shy away from challenges with a youthful group this season. They also will play Princeton and Delaware at home which will be a good test for the Knights. I could see them having a fairly hard time finding wins before the start of NEC play but this team surprised last year and they will look to do the same this season.

Brooklyn Hoops Winter Festival^
12/28/2014 Hofstra^ (Barclays Center) 2:30 p.m.

LIU Brooklyn’s non-conference schedule is a good mix of good teams and possible winnable games. This season, the traveling won’t be as much with all their games being in the eastern time zone. They will play seven games in the New York City area and their farthest road trip will be up to Maine. Their first four games though are all away from Brooklyn and won’t be a trip to the park with games at St. John’s, Saint Joseph’s and Stony Brook at MSG. They’ll host FIU and Hofstra at the Barclays Center. For a team with a ton of youth on this season, this is a good schedule for them to play.

12/20/2014 at Rutgers 2 p.m.
12/30/2014 at NJIT 7 p.m.

The Red Flash were the last time to release their schedule. It is pretty stacked. They have road affairs at Cincinnati, Texas, Duquesne and Rutgers. They only play three home games with one of those against Division III Keystone College. They do get a nice home game against Albany but that is all they get. It will be interesting to see how they navigate through their rather difficult non-conference schedule.

  1. Bryant plays @ Pittsburgh……..

    • Thanks, I added the Pitt and also omitted the Harvard game in January. It is rare you find a team play not one but two games during the conference schedule. I also upgrade my rating for them from a 4 to a 6 with these two games.
