Congratulations are in order to the LIU Brooklyn women’s basketball team. On Monday night, the Blackbirds defeated the FDU Knights at the Steinberg Wellness Center 56-40 on Senior Night, resulting in them clinching the final available spot in the NEC Tournament which starts on Sunday, March 9th.

LIU Brooklyn return back to the NEC Tournament after a one-year absence last season. LIU is currently 9-18 overall and 7-9 in the NEC. They are currently the holders of the eight-seed but can climb up further with two games left to play in the season.

They have won five out of their last seven games after starting the conference season at 2-7. What has improved? Their defense. During their 2-7 start, teams were scoring 68.5 ppg on LIU. In the last seven games, they have cut the opposition scoring by ten at 58.1 ppg.

They have gotten great play from likely All-NEC star senior Cleandra Roberts who is averaging 18.7 ppg and 7.4 rpg. Roberts has only been held to single figures scoring twice this season. They have also gotten good play out of sophomore Sophie Bhasin (10.2 ppg) off the bench and senior Fanny Cavallo (7.0 ppg/6.7 rpg).

The Blackbirds will find out next Monday night who their first round opponent will officially be. At the moment, they would be taking on the top-seeded Robert Morris Colonials at RMU.
