Seton Hall comes into this game looking to right the ship after getting knocked off by FDU on Sunday at home 58-54. FDU as we all recall was unanimously picked to finish last in the NEC this season. Needless to say, Seton Hall won’t be coming into this game overlooking LIU Brooklyn.
Seton Hall comes in at 4-3. None of their three losses have come by more than four points. The Pirates are scoring 74.9 ppg and 1.03 points per possession on offense. Their effective field goal percentage is 49.5% and are shooting 35% from three. Their defense is allowing is a Big East second-worst 71.7 ppg and teams are scoring 0.98 points per possession which is tied for eighth in the new Big East. The Pirates have allowed teams to shot 44.1% from the field and 35.1% from three.
Senior guard/forward Fuquan Edwin leads the Pirates in scoring at 15.3 ppg. Earlier this season against Mercer, Edwin scored 35 points. Last season against LIU, he scored 13 points in 23 minutes in their blowout win. Sterling Gibbs, who is in his first year playing with the Pirates after transferring from Texas, is scoring 14.4 ppg and is the team’s leading assist man at 4.3 apg. He has had three games of over 20 points or more so far this season.
Brian Oliver is the next leading scorer with 8.4 ppg. He is shooting over 40% from three. Senior center Gene Teague is Seton Hall’s leading rebounder at 6.4 rpg while scoring 6.9 ppg. The Pirates won’t have the services of junior forward Patrik Auda who is likely done for the season after re-injuring his right foot which kept him off the court for most of last season.
LIU Brooklyn comes into this game snapping a four-game losing streak with a buzzer-beating layup by junior Gerrell Martin against Norfolk State to win 74-72. LIU is 2-4 and will play their third true road game of the season.
Jason Brickman comes in needing just 25 assists to become the NEC’s new all-time career-assist leader. His 14 assists vs Norfolk State match the season-high assist total he had vs Saint Peter’s in the season opener. He enters the game as the nation’s leading assist man with 10.3 apg.
E.J. Reed has a slight lead as the team’s leading scorer with 12.2 ppg. Gerrell Martin trails right behind him with a 12.0 ppg average. Landon Atterberry leads LIU in rebounding with 4.7 rpg with his 11.2 ppg. Atterberry is shooting a team-high 53.8% from the field.
Gilbert Parga is expected to make his return back to the court after missing the Norfolk State game on Sunday due to a lacerated elbow. Parga is LIU’s third leading scorer at 11.6 ppg.
In last season’s meeting, it was never a game as Seton Hall had a 19-point lead at the half on their way to a 31-point win at the Barclays Center. The Pirates return three of the top six scorers from their meeting last season. They shot an incredible 58.3% from the field versus LIU and out-rebounded the Blackbirds by 11 last season.
The Blackbirds are still looking to hold a team to under 1.0 ppp this season and are still looking to out-rebound a team this season. More than likely, neither will happen against the taller Seton Hall squad. For LIU to win, they are going to need to continue showing the hustle and fight they showed at times this season especially against Norfolk State. LIU are need to continue getting contributions from everyone as was the case on Sunday. If that happens and they can get some rebounds, win the free throw battle then LIU has a good shot.
KenPom Score Projection: 76-65, Seton Hall (LIU Win Probability: 14%)
Next up for the Blackbirds:
LIU Brooklyn continues on to their second game on their Newark-PA-Newark road trip as they take on the Lehigh Mountain Hawks of the Patriot League on Monday, December 9 at 7:00pm.
