LIU Brooklyn announced last week that the on-campus home for LIU Brooklyn’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, the Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center, also known as the WRAC for short, is going to be renamed to the Steinberg Wellness Center in a dedication ceremony on Wednesday afternoon, April 24th.
The renaming is in dedication to Dr. David J. Steinberg who is retiring as LIU’s president this coming June after 27 years in that position. Dr. Kimberly R. Cline is set to become LIU’s tenth president in July. Cline will become the university’s first female president in their history.
Since moving to the WRAC from their previous home court, the Schwartz Athletic Center which was formerly the Brooklyn Paramount Theater, back in January of 2006, LIU Brooklyn MBB has gone 83-23 for .783 winning percentage. LIU Brooklyn MBB has not lost more than three games at the WRAC in any of the last five seasons. LIU was 11-2 at the WRAC last season and had a 31-game WRAC winning streak snapped by Wagner in January. LIU’s current home winning streak going into next season stands at six with the last five of those wins coming at the WRAC.
This past season, LIU Brooklyn finished seventh in the NEC in home attendance with an average of 1,159 fans per game, an increase from 1,052 the season before.
