2012-13 LIU Brooklyn MBB Season Rewind

An intense roller coaster ride. There is no other better way to describe the season the LIU Brooklyn Brooklyn Blackbirds had in 2012-13. One that ended in historic fashion as the Blackbirds became the first ever Northeast Conference team to win back-to-back-to-back NEC Tournament championships and make a third straight appearance in the NCAA tournament. The way that LIU got to that point was by no means a picnic. Of the three championship seasons, this one definitely had its biggest share of crazy events happen which only added to the drama as the season unfolded yet help make the season one of the sweetest for Blackbirds fans.

It all started back in April when Jim Ferry on April 10th announced that he was leaving LIU Brooklyn after ten seasons as head coach and after guiding the Blackbirds to two straight NEC championships to take over as head coach at Duquesne University. After the announcement was made, LIU Brooklyn Athletic Director John Suarez immediately promoted associate head coach Jack Perri, who had been with the program for the past seven years, to become LIU’s 13th men’s basketball head coach. Game Highlights

LIU Brooklyn Post Game Press Conference

For three straight seasons, LIU Brooklyn has made the NCAA Tournament as the winners of the NEC Tournament. For the third straight season, LIU bows out of the NCAAs after only one game as James Madison played their game plan to near perfection and knocked LIU out of the NCAA Tournament in their first four matchup in Dayton, Ohio, winning 68-55.

Give James Madison all the credit, from the opening tip they controlled the tempo of this game. They also started the game off red hot shooting, getting off to a 10-2 start and getting up 20-8 before the under 12 media timeout in the first half. LIU’s backcourt had trouble getting the offense going for most of the first half. JMU size advantage at the guard position slowed down the LIU attack as Brickman and Garner just couldn’t get to the rim or open from the outside. “I was a little concerned with them going small to start the game.” said LIU Brooklyn head coach Jack Perri after the loss. “I didn’t like our matchups to start the game because (Rayshawn) Goins couldn’t play. I actually thought it would have helped us if he did play.” [Read more…]

Isn’t LIU Brooklyn the ones in the NCAAs?!

Since Sunday night when LIU Brooklyn learned that they will have to travel to Dayton, Ohio to play in a gently worded “first four” game against James Madison on Wednesday, LIU has had plenty of people pat them on the back, wrote and said nice things about them and their season, wished them good luck in their game, etc.

Of course, there are always things that come up or people who seem like they go out of their way to not give this program the respect that they are due and quite frankly have justifiably earned by winning not one, not two but three Northeast Conference championships in a row. A feat that has never happened before in the NEC 32-year history of the conference. [Read more…]
