Blackbirds’ Hoops News and Notes: August 9

It has been a couple of  weeks since the last Blackbirds’ Hoops News and Notes and with 65 days to the official start of the 2012-13 college basketball season according to countdown clock of college hoops maven Jon Rothstein, it is as good a time as any to play a little catch-up and check-in on what is going on in and around the world of the Blackbirds’ as we head towards the end of the summer here.

– This morning, John Templon of Big Apple Buckets released his LIU Brooklyn recruiting recap. John and his partner Ryan Peters have done a great job this off-season recapping every NEC team 2012 incoming player class on their site and it is a great read for any NEC fan. John got some good quotes from new head coach Jack Perri and goes in-depth to each of the two new Texas recruits, D.J. Griggs and E.J. Reed. What is great to hear is that Perri makes mention on how hard working and focused the team has been during their summer workouts and that this group doesn’t look like they have taken their success for granted especially since there are six seniors on this team making their last go-around. Another worthy note is that Perri and his staff are still looking for one more player to add to this year’s roster and a have a scholarship available due to the release of Taurean Waller-Prince back in May. There was no word on whether they are looking to add another freshman to the roster or might look to add some experience and look for a JUCO transfer who can be provide some necessary bench minutes. If there is any question mark going into this season, it is definitely depth. Currently, they have only five guards and six forwards on the roster.

– John Templon was also busy writing for Mid-Major Madness and he put out his list of the Top 10 players in the NEC going into ’12-’13 season. Not at all surprising (as I had these same guys on my  Top 10 list earlier in the off-season) LIU’s big three as they are begin dubbed made the list, point guard Jason Brickman, forward Jamal Olasewere and forward Julian Boyd. Brickman was listed at number six, Olasewere at number four and Boyd at number one. Earlier this off-season when I did my Top 10 list, I had Brickman listed at number five, Olasewere at number three and Boyd also at number one.

– Some of the Blackbirds’ have had a busy summer playing in various summer leagues this off-season. Jamal Olasewere played in Kenner League down in the Maryland/D.C. area and over this past weekend he tweeted this photo of himself holding the Kenner League trophy as league champs along with Zaid Hearst, sophomore guard from Quinnipiac. Gerrell Martin has been playing some summer league ball up at the famous Rucker Park in Harlem. Julian Boyd has been seen playing some summer league ball at the NYC Nike Pro City at Baruch College in Manhattan. Here is some youtube video of a game he played on July 10 for team Big Apple Basketball in purple. Boyd is wearing #40.

– Finally, Jamal Olasewere was once again mentioned on another Bleacher Report list. This time, he made the list of Top 10 high-efficiency scorers in 2012-13. He was listed at number six.
