News and Notes from Around the NEC: July 31

We are halfway through the summer and today marks 100 days from November 9 which is the date most teams will be getting their 2012-13 season underway. It has been fairly quiet in the news and notes department of late but in the last couple of days, some noteworthy items have come across and most of them dealing with scheduling. [Read more…]

Since joining the Northeast Conference in 1981, there has been two two-year periods where the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds were among the best teams if not the best team in the conference. In the last two years, LIU has gone to two straight postseasons, both of which has been the NCAA Tournament. Before this, the last time LIU had gone to two straight postseasons was in 1996-97 and 1997-98 when the Blackbirds appeared in one NCAA Tournament and a NIT Tournament. The current ’10-’12 bunch has a combined record of 52-15 and 38-4 in NEC play if you included the NEC tournament games. The teams for ’96-’98 had a combined record of 42-20 with a 29-5 record in NEC play. I thought it would be fun to compare the two teams from the two different winning eras and go position-by-position and see which player I would like in a matchup if the teams from then and now played against one another. If it was possible to get a game between the two teams, I would be the first one in line to see it! [Read more…]

No team in the previous 31 seasons of the Northeast Conference has been able to complete the three-peat. In entering the 32nd season of the Northeast Conference, LIU becomes the sixth team in the NEC history looking to capture this elusive distinction. So I decided to look through the NEC record books and see how did the first five teams in the NEC who won back-to-back championships did in that third season looking to win three straights titles. What I learned was pretty interesting. Here is how the first five NEC back-to-back champions fared in their three-peat attempt season: [Read more…]
